Current technological advances have opened new avenues of energy production that were not possible even a generation ago. The United States must take proactive steps toward employing all available options to meet the energy demands of a growing population. By utilizing clean coal technology, hydropower, solar, wind, geothermal, and natural gas sources we can both increase the efficiency of power generation and reduce air and water pollution. Increasing domestic production will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, both driving down gasoline prices and limiting the economic resources of countries hostile to the United States.
It is important, however, to remember that many Pennsylvanians are employed in the energy sector and this issue is not strictly about energy production. Policy must balance these concerns and ensure that our drive toward increasing self-sufficient and environmentally-conscious forms of energy production does not destroy the livelihoods of our families and neighbors.
